Friday, November 17

9:30-10:45AM: Recapturing Our Shared Voices: Humor and Play as a Healing Force in Literature for Children
America’s Center Convention Complex, Rm. 229
Poet/author, Nikki Grimes will introduce participants to the common ground that can be found and nurtured through laughter and books. Authors Mac Barnett, Jon Klassen, Dan Santat, and Yuyi Morales will discuss how humor in children’s literature can help readers find mutual understandings that heal wounds and help students find their voice.

This session is designed to provide teachers, media specialists, parents, administrators, instructional coaches, and any others with a passion for children’s literature with information about and recommendations for thirty titles published in 2016 that the Notable Children’s Books in the Language Arts Committee selected for their 2017 award. Do not miss Jon Klassen’s one-hour autograph session at our CLA Booth! This award-winning children’s book creator will be signing the specially designed, limited-edition CLA tote bag featuring the bear from I Want My Hat Back. This is a great opportunity to learn more about how to get published in the Journal of Children’s Literature.
6:00-7:15PM:“Justice, Representation, and Nonfiction Children’s Literature” (Master Class)
America’s Center Convention Complex, Rm. 275
The 24th annual Children’s Literature Assembly Master Class focuses on selecting, evaluating, and teaching “diverse” nonfiction children’s literature in university-level classes. After brief opening remarks, attendees engage in a moderated discussion about the possibilities and potential pitfalls that arise when utilizing diverse nonfiction texts in university children’s literature courses. Sunday, November 19

7:00-8:45AM: Annual CLA 2017 Breakfast featuring Award-winning author, Kevin Henkes
America's Center Convention Complex, Rms. 221 & 228
This not-to-be-missed Sunday breakfast features Kevin Henkes as our keynote speaker and includes audience favorites such as the annual children’s book art auction and a raffle for a set of 2017 Notable Books, among other activities! The breakfast is a paid event; however, Henkes’s talk is free and open to all attendees. See the NCTE Registration site to purchase tickets ahead of time to ensure you have a seat. This event typically sells out before NCTE begins.
